Well-manufactured above ground storage tanks should last for years and years. Select parts or coatings may become damaged. In the case of a concrete, factory-welded, fiberglass or plastic tank, worn parts may even require tank replacement. Some damaged coatings can be repaired in the field, but often field-welded tanks need to re-coated more than once during their total life cycle, and blasting and re-application of a coating is expensive. Panel-designed tanks, like the above ground storage tanks designed by CTT, are easier to repair. The damaged panel can simply be removed and replaced with a new panel.
Above ground storage tanks are best suited for storing certain types of product. CTT recommends understanding the behavior of the product you plan to store for paramount safety. Failure most often occurs when companies store a product inside a tank that was not designed to properly store that material. For example, some grains are sticky and may clog inside a tank that was not designed for grain. When stored in a tank with incorrect geometry, some materials may cause “voids” in the tank which could lead to disaster. Pounding on the tank, for example, to disrupt the void could result in serious injury or death when a massive drop in the product finally occurs.
